The group protesting the use of the Power & Light District for a Pride event on June 4 announces that the group is planning a protest parade that day. The route will take marchers down the sidewalks from 19th and Main Street, through the Crossroads and to the Power & Light District.
Show Me Pride LLC, the official group in Kansas City hosting the June 4-6 Pride Festival, recently announced that the Pride parade scheduled for Sunday, June 6, had to be canceled. The reason was that the festival's recent change of venue from Penn Valley Park to Richard Berkley Riverfront Park happened too late to get permits and make arrangements for a new route for the parade.
The protest group has started a Facebook page called "Kansas City Pride Parade," which states that they are not affiliated with the Show Me Pride LLC or the Kansas City Gay Pride Festival
The group's media release states: "Members of the LGBTQIA community in Kansas City who are upset over Show Me Pride, LLC's decision to partner with the Power and Light district and ignore its history and current acts of discrimination and exclusion will be hosting a parade and rally to show that not everyone in the community is willing to support the racist, classist, sexist, homophobic and transphobic policies and customs of the Power & Light District. Awards will be given for best costume.
The march will begin on the sidewalk at the corner of 19th and Main at 5:30 p.m. June 4, the group reports.
Rick Bumgardner, President of Show Me Pride LLC has confirmed that the march being promoted as "Kansas City Pride Parade" has no affiliation with the official Show Me Pride festival.
The official Power the Light with Pride event begins at 6 p.m. Friday, June 4.
