Sweetness: Adam Tyler Embraces Pop
June 21, 2012
by Monica Soto

Click For Full Size Everything happens for a reason. At least, Adam Tyler says so. Tyler, 24, born in Columbia, Mo., is a rising pop artist with a clear goal, a soothing voice and an optimistic attitude.

I spoke with Tyler the day before he performed at the Kansas City Gay Pride Festival in the Power & Light District in June. Tyler was sweet to the bone, and I found it hard not to hug him. But I settled, like the professional I attempt to be, for a handshake instead.

Listening to Tyler’s music makes it easy to tell that he loves pop and electronica and has absolutely no problem combining them to his liking.

Tyler says, “My music is definitely pop. That’s the music that I’ve always been passionate about.”

Dance music with some depth is the ultimate goal, as far as weaving these genres goes.

Tyler says, “It’s quite dancy, and I love European pop music. It’s electronic pop music with a bit of emotion, because I like to have good stories and a little bit of depth in my lyrics.”

Tyler is influenced by a variety of artists, including Robyn, Madonna, and TLC. He is also big fan of European acts like Hurts and September.

He adds, “I like Depeche Mode from the ’80s, Rob Zombie and Nine Inch Nails, the gritty darker stuff. It’s a broad spectrum, but it’s electronic pop, mostly.”

Tyler, who once starred in his high school’s performance of The Cat In the Hat, is fulfilling every theater geek’s dream of performing on a stage in front of adoring fans.

“It was my first opportunity to perform,” he said. “So that kind of just opened my mind to performing and doing it as a career.”

Though Tyler has only been seriously writing music for about a year, he dabbled in it when he was much younger.

“I’ve been writing, I think, since I was 9 or 10. Honestly, you do not want to see the songs that I wrote -- they were terrible!”

But he said, “The Shattered Ice album, which is my current album, is really the first time that I started writing lyrics seriously, so that was a big step for me.”

Though Tyler is doing what he loves, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. His initial plan was to go to the United Kingdom to try to make his dream come true.

However, Tyler only had a visitor’s visa, which complicated his plans for auditioning. According to Tyler, “When the immigration guys found out that I was auditioning for all these groups and management stuff, they took it as me getting work [..."> so I flew back the next day.”

However, he says, “I’m one of those people who thinks everything happens for a reason. So because that happened, I ended up in L.A. And I got in a boy band out there. Then I met a lyricist, who I eventually got with my producer, who made Shattered Ice. So that whole chain of events, I think, happened for a reason.”
